The Lollipop Man

Justin - March 2011
Drawing inks and black pen on card
The early impressionists broke with convention by capturing every day moments from the lives of ordinary people. These moments suggest a bigger story and raise questions about the people and what is happening to them. I was interested in using a related idea, of finding Jesus in the every day.
The picture shows an ordinary lollipop man, in an ordinary street, helping children get safely to their school. The parallels with the work of Jesus are not difficult to see: Jesus is the only ‘safe place’ available to cross from death to life. The forces of sin and death are brought to a stop by his resurrection power. We are like careless and vulnerable children, but because of who he is and the authority he has, we can be kept safe.

Burrswood According to St Mark

Justin - Jan 2011
Drawing ink and marker pen on card
I love the different 'personalities' of the four gospel writers. Mark is fast, and paints his picture of Jesus with bold, economical strokes. All through there is the question of the identity of Jesus, and he leaves us in no doubt that this is the promised Messiah, the Son of God. But then there is the darker side of his message: what kind of Messiah is this? One that must suffer and die at the hands of men. I thought I would try and apply Mark's style to a favourite place of mine.
